But Sean did not start here…
How does a person choose to give so much of his life and his family to make such a difference in the community?
Well, the beginning of Sean’s reputation in the community started much darker…
Sean’s elementary years were a dark time as he was moved to an inner-city and threw a young child into a very racially charged neighborhood where he was one of only 3 children in his neighborhood that were his color. It was at this young age Sean learned that life in the inner city was going to change his life forever. He was forced to fight daily to protect his little brother. Knowing every day, he would be attacked and beaten for the color of his skin, Sean learned quickly that if he wanted to survive, he would have to learn to fight and defend himself, and he did. By the time Sean left middle school, he had a reputation of being a violent and angry person.
By 15 Sean was already a member of a large street gang and had been moving up in the ranks quickly with a reputation demanding to be fear and respected. By 16 Sean was now the president of a gang that ruled his area of the city and was soon living on the streets 24/7. Choosing to leave the security of his family home for the harsh world on the projects.
For years Sean recruited displaced teens and created a network of criminals that were set to become one of the most organized and fear street level organized “syndicates” in the city. Sean’s reputation and connections networked from Quad Cities to Chicago Englewood District (southside), and even into St Louis.
For years Sean recruited displaced teens and created a network of criminals that were set to become one of the most powerful organized gangs in his city. Soon his actions had racked up a large list of allies and enemies. To many it looked like success, but that was not how the battle played out in Sean’s mind and heart. Sean never was able to go anywhere that he didn’t have to worry about being jumped or killed. All this before he turned 18 years of age. During this time Sean had already attempted to kill himself twice. At one point Sean was ordered by the courts to a psychiatric evaluation in the suicide wing of a mental hospital. For weeks mental health professionals probed Sean’s mind trying to find out what made a young boy turn out with so much hate and anger for himself and others. Finally having to release Sean back to the streets in which embraced him with open arms.
“Where is the missionary for the gang leader? Where is the rehab for
the drug dealer addicted to power? Where was the church?”
Where is the missionary for the gang leader? Where is the rehab for the drug dealer addicted to power? Where was the church? During this time Sean would attempt to visit churches but because of his reputation and recruiting methods, most churches banned him from attending. This of course only fueled Sean’s hatred and blaming of God and the church for why he was who he was. Sean was on a path that was leading him to prison or the grave and possibly both. By the time Sean was 21 he had served several sentences in the county jail and was facing a long stretch in a state penitentiary for his illegal activities.
One hot summer day when all hope for Sean seemed lost a seed was about to be planted in his heart with a letter from his sister begging him to change his life and return to God. As much as Sean was tired of the hate and the street he did not know how. It was in this same summer Sean’s parents, who he had avoided for years, found him and invited him to church. Sean went with them and gave his life to Christ that day and later was invited by Pastor Cleddie Keith of Heritage Fellowship Church in Kentucky to move to Florence, KY and he would help raise him and get him on the right path.
Sean took him up on that offer and soon Pastor Keith had a missionary pick me up and drive him three states to Northern Kentucky.
Since that time Sean has dedicated his life to being a dad to kids of all ages with a goal of not letting anyone experience the pain of his past. Sean has a new love for the church, though it first turned its back on him. He now works hard to welcome everyone, even if they don’t realize they are in need in hopes to return the Church to its rightful place in the community.
